Waterjet cutting: high-quality processing of any materials
Waterjet cutting is based on a natural process – water erosion. In machine tools, not an ordinary metal cutter is used as a cutting tool, but a jet of water with abrasive material supplied at high speed and under high pressure. The high-speed flow of the mixture separates and carries away particles of the processed material from the cutting cavity, leaving an even and smooth cut. Waterjet cutting is a versatile technology and is used to work with different materials.
Features of waterjet technology
For waterjet cutting of metals, installations are used that function in the following way:
- One of the main components of waterjet cutting machines is high power pumps. They create a pressure of 3.8 to 6.2 thousand bar inside the cutting head;
- The jet of water formed in the nozzle enters the mixer at a speed exceeding the speed of sound;
- in the mixer, water is mixed with abrasive material supplied from a special hopper. Solid particles enhance the destructive effect of the jet;
- After mixing, the cutting jet is applied to the material exactly to the cut.
Cutting tables are made in different configurations. They have a housing that ensures the stability of the system when operating at high speeds. Specialized software is used to control the cutting process.
Materials that waterjet machines can work with
Waterjet cutting technology has found its application in almost all industries. With the help of a water jet with an abrasive, you can cut any materials:
- ferrous and non-ferrous metals, their alloys;
- alloyed (including stainless and heat-resistant) steels;
- ceramics, tiles;
- natural and artificial stone;
